The long winter season can cause serious damage to your deck or patio, from mold and mildew to stains and rot. Precaution is better than cure right? So be prepared in advance. Not only the winter but also other seasons affect a lot. Here are some awesome deck maintenance tips to enable you to keep protected your deck or patio from the curse of the different seasons.

Deck maintenance in the winter season

Regular Cleaning:

If you live in a very cold climate area where snowfall is common in winter then you have to keep clean the deck surface and remove all the snow properly. Shovel snow can create marks on the deck surface and regular cleaning and deck maintenance prevent it.

Inspection for any damage:

Check each and every corner of the deck to find any damage is there. It is very important, whether it is minor or major it does not matter. A proper inspection can guide you to protect your deck from serious damage. If you find minor damage then take steps accordingly.

If your deck is made of wood then check the softwoods and replace the rotten part, because if you hammer any nail or screw to tighten up anything for deck maintenance then the nail or screw can sink into the wood.

Crop the overhanging branches:

You must determine the overhanging branch of the tree is stable enough to carry the weight of the snow if you are not sure about it then crop the extra part of the branch that is over the deck. A large fallen tree branch can damage your deck.

Sweep and Wash:

Sweep away all dirt and debris from your deck, including leaves. If debris is left on your patio or deck for the winter, it can cause stains and mold, mildew, fungus, and algae growth. Use mild soap and water to wash your deck. For hard-to-clean dirt stains or mold, use a pressure washer. But make sure it isn’t too high. While pressure washers are excellent for removing all dirt particles, a high setting can cause damage to your deck.

Sealant test:

Maintaining the deck sealant, make sure your deck can repel all the moisture all winter long. Do a water test to test the sealant. Simply spray on the deck surface and check doest the water bread up and pools on the top or not. if it makes then the sealant is on otherwise you have to reseal it.

Now that you’ve spent the winter, it’s time to enjoy the outdoors in spring. Unwashed wooden decks are mold and mold-inducing agents that cause rot.

Begin by removing debris between the patio stones with a terrace table or spatula. Once the space is clean, thoroughly clean the area. When you are ready to clean with the solution, choose the right cleaner for your building material.

Wood: Use a standard deck cleaner and follow its instructions.

Compounds: Use cleaners specially formulated for composites. Attack grease and oil stains with degreasing agents and commercial detergents.

Vinyl: Only hot water and neutral soap should be used to remove mold, mold, and dirt.

After cleaning the cover, seal it. You have the following finishing options:

The transparent sealant makes the wood grain and the natural color of the wood visible toner that adds a little color but completely exposes the grain and provides some protection from sunlight.

A translucent stain that stains the wood but shows some grain.

Solid dirt and opaque colors that contain weather damage completely cover the grain.

Depending on the amount of cleaning required, the patio has several options. For deep and abundant cleaning, the surface can be pressure cleaned. For gentle cleaning, clean the patio with a hose and scrub with mild detergent. Bleach solutions are an effective cure for difficult stains.

Remember to do this deep cleaning before removing furniture from the terrace or patio.

Summer work: inspection and repair

If the weather is warm and dry, you may want to take a closer look at the terrace and patio. Pay particular attention to locations within 6 inches of the ground or near water sources such as vertical spots and flower pots.

  • Look for signs of corruption. Start by checking the stairs. Check each surrounding post. If you can push the driver into the suspicious area by more than 1/4 inch, it is probably corrupt.
  • Examine the ledger. Using a flashlight under the cover, pay special attention to the ledger, the frame that joins the cover to the house. Check the remaining joists, struts, railings, and beams. Examine all hardware below, especially joist brackets, and replace any that are very rusty. Check the posts and joists for signs of corruption.
  • Check grout. Look at the grout between the masonry in your garden. If any are released or completely disappear, repair them.
